Everyone knows and has seen miniature schnauzer puppies for sale and wished they could take them all. These cute and cuddly creatures are a ball of energy all wrapped into a little protective package.

The long mustache is probably the most pronounced feature of the miniature schnauzer. It is what gives it the “cute” appeal. Other than that they are very small in stature and come in a variety of great colors including: black, salt and pepper, and silver. Solid white is a very rare color, but does occur. They have a long and black nose with egg shaped eyes. The V shaped ears point forward. They do not get very big or very tall. They usually weigh about thirteen to fifteen pounds and usually get only twelve to fourteen inches tall.

A miniature schnauzer\’s personality is that it is just plain affectionate. They make a great family pet, especially because they get along with everyone and children. They can be a little suspicious of strangers, but tend to get used to people pretty quick. It is a big barker, but it is not as annoying as some of the small dogs.

The history of the miniature schnauzer is not as clear as some breeds. It is thought that the German Terrier, Wolfspitz, and the Black Poodle were what the species of dog evolved from. The current small stature of the miniature schnauzer was brought on by breeding the standard schnauzer with many small dog breeds. These dogs jobs, way back when, were used by the human race for hunting, droving, pulling farm carts, stock tender, and even keeping an eye on the local kids and herds. That is a huge list of duties which just proves how docile these dogs are.

Before the year of 1910, the miniature schnauzer was only recognized as a breed in Germany. Following WWI, it expanded it reign to all over the world. It was officially let into the AKC in 1925. There are now three sizes of schnauzers recognized in the AKC: Giant, standard, and of course the miniature. All three are quite popular in the US, but the miniature is the most popular.
